Summer 2005 Offerings


An Introduction to Clinical Improvisation on Guitar. This course will introduce participants to clinical improvisation on guitar through lecture and experiential exercises. Content will include:

  1. Using what you already know
  2. Applying to different musical styles in the clinic
  3. The use of various strumming techniques
  4. Accompanying percussive and melodic instruments.

(Participants are expected to be able to play open string chords, and sing while playing.)

John A. Carpente, MA, CMT, NRMT is the founding director of The Rebecca Center for Music Therapy. He has been a practicing clinician for 9 years, and is a faculty member at Molloy College. John is one of only three music therapists to have completed the Nordoff-Robbins certification program on the guitar.


Developing an Authentic Voice through Guitar. As music therapists, it is important to be able to express an authentic presence through our instrument. This course is designed to introduce therapists to this process using the guitar through experiential exercises and role plays. Topics will include:

  1. Reacquainting yourself to the instrument through listening and simple improvisations
  2. Creating optimum tone
  3. Developing a range of tambours
  4. Exploring efficiency of hand and finger movement
  5. Interplay of the guitar and voice.

This course is suitable for beginners and "advanced players."

Carter Thornton, MA MT-BC is a music therapist and classically trained guitarist and improviser. He is a performing musician with extensive touring and recording experience, and a composer including work for theater, dance, film and installation.


Expanding Your Guitar Language. This course is perfect for therapists who feel "stuck" musically, and who are looking to "jump-start" their playing. This course is designed to expand your theoretical knowledge of the instrument while bringing your playing to a higher level. Topics include:

  1. Basic theory and applying it to the guitar
  2. Chord structuring
  3. The application of scales
  4. Improvising over chords.

A booklet outlining the entire is included with this course. (Participants are expected to be able to play bar chords, and be able to accompany themselves while singing).

Kevin Allen, co-founder of the Frank Tuscano Music School, has been teaching guitar for over 30 years. He has performed on Broadway, has toured throughout the United States and has graduated students into the finest musical school throughout the country, such as the Manes School of Music, Manhattan School of Music, and the Berkley School of music in Boston.
