Music Therapy Programs In 2004-2005

Because of the ongoing demand for our effective programs, our waiting list continues to grow. In order to try and meet this need, we have created additional outreach programs at the following facilities:

Awards & Presentations

  • In May 2004, Rebecca Center's founding executive director John Carpente was awarded the "Outstanding Contributions to the Discipline in the Field of Music Therapy award by The Boyer College of Music at Temple University in Philadelphia, PA. Our congratulations go out to John!
  • At this years Mid-Atlantic Regional Music Therapy Conference held in March 2004, three of our own Rebecca Center staff, John Carpente, Evelyn Selesky, and Suzanne Sorel each lectured and presided throughout the 4 day conference.
  • In September 2004, John Carpente conducted a 2-day workshop at Georgia College and State University in Milledgeville, GA.
  • In October 2004 the Rebecca Center's own John Carpente was featured on NBC's Wednesday's Child, helping to adopt a special needs boy named Daniel. NBC featured John in a music therapy session with Daniel.

Recap of 2004 Benefit Events

FEBRUARY: Wine Tasting -

The Kellenburg Reception Room at Molloy College was the site of a wine tasting to benefit The Rebecca Center. Award-winning wines directly from Long Island's own nationally acclaimed Martha Clara Vineyard were featured, along with the swinging sounds of jazz guitarist Kevin Allen, and delicious food provided by GROOVALICIOUS Entertainment Services.

JULY: "Cocktails for a Cause" -

Rebecca Center hosted a sultry summer benefit happy hour at the fabulous Session 73 music and tapas lounge, located on Manhattan's Upper East Side.

NOVEMBER: Annual Appeal -

The Rebecca Center is gearing up for its next Annual Appeal, an essential part of our fundraising efforts. Your gift of $25, $50, $100, $500 or even more will help ensure that The Rebecca Center will continue to provide services to those whom we currently serve and perhaps shorten a growing waiting list of parents that want the best for their child. Information on how to participate in our Annual Appeal will be distributed shortly.

Education

In June and July 2004, The Rebecca Center hosted its first continuing education courses: An Introduction to Vocal Improvisation in Music Psychotherapy by Dr. Diane Austin, and An Introduction to Clinical Improvisation by Suzanne Nowikas Sorel MA, MT-BC, NRMT. Each course was well attended and received incredible feedback. Participants included music therapy professionals, music therapy students, and social workers from New York, Long Island, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, and even Denmark!

The Guitar Institute for Music Therapists (GIMT)

The Rebecca Center is proud to present The Guitar Institute for Music Therapists (GIMT), the first institute specifically designed to meet the guitar needs of music therapists and music therapy students of all levels.



The GIMT provides:

  • CBMT credits for all courses
  • Fundamental courses for beginners
  • Courses for the intermediate players
  • Master classes for the experienced players

  • Group and 1:1 supervision

Founded in 1996 by certified music therapist John A. Carpente, The Rebecca Center for Music Therapy's mission is to empower individuals with special needs to reach their developmental potential using the natural therapeutic properties of music. The Rebecca Center, a nonprofit organization, serves autistic children and adolescents, adults living with AIDS, and at-risk teens throughout Long Island and New York City. The Rebecca Center uses live, interactive music-making to establish relationships and unlock doors to communication and self-actualization.
